How do you know the students know and understand concepts?

How do you provide opportunities for students to assess their own learning?

The Lesson.

As you refer to figure 7.2, you will see that there is reference to Universal Design for Learning. This framework was developed by the Center for Applied Special Technology, or CAST. This framework takes into account how students learn. That being said, it is important that we use this framework in our planning and implementation of that planning. In figure 7.2, I have identified specific questions that would guide your thinking when creating activities for multiple learner types.

For the final stage of planning, educators should focus on how they will make their expectations and specific learning explicit to the students. As I mentioned earlier, one important high-leverage practice for math teachers is to use the cycle for learning. This is where teachers give students an opportunity to show you what they know and understand from the previous lesson. It is also an opportunity for the teacher to explain to the students what they will be doing for that particular day and bridge previous learning to the new learnings. Refer to figure 7.3 as an example of how to do this for your class.
